elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3e47206\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve landed on this page, you were probably looking for information to book a tour of Amsterdam\u2019s Red Light District, or wondering why our company has decided to stop offering it.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d like to explain that decision to you in the first person, honestly and respectfully, because we feel we owe you that \u2014 as a traveller, as a customer and, above all, as a person. My name is David, and I\u2019m a co-founder of Gu\u00edas &amp; Tours.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>Our early days in Amsterdam: from admiration and curiosity to a harsher reality<\/b><\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us, when we first arrived in Amsterdam back in 2013\u20132015, felt something very similar: surprise and admiration.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were coming from Spain, a society where topics like sex and prostitution were often wrapped in taboo, sensationalism or silence. In the Netherlands, however, we found a model that, at first glance, seemed much more advanced:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a clear legal framework,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supposed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> protection for people working in prostitution,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health and labour inspections,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the feeling that the subject was discussed more openly and treated as something \u201cnormalised\u201d.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a while, we genuinely believed that this was an interesting \u2013 and apparently more respectful \u2013 way of approaching a reality that exists in every society. We started from a key assumption: that there were people who, \u201cof their own free will\u201d, chose to work in the sex industry. And from that point of view, we understood that a tour of the Red Light District could be a cultural, historical and social experience, as long as it was handled with respect.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many years, first as guides working for other companies and later in our own project, I and many members of our team led this tour. We explained the history, the legal and social background, shared some anecdotes and a bit of humour, but always with respect and almost an educational intention.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>What changed: when you start looking more closely<\/b><\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But over the years, something started to feel off.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As society changed, we changed too \u2014 both as guides and as people. Movements like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/metoomvmt.org\/\"><b>#MeToo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerged; there was more public debate about patriarchy and the role of women in history and in our societies; power dynamics and sexual violence were increasingly questioned; and we began to listen to more testimonies and read more about the reality of prostitution and trafficking.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we had previously taken for granted (\u201cif it\u2019s legal and regulated, it must be fairer\u201d) stopped looking so simple.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We started asking ourselves uncomfortable but necessary questions:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are all the people in the windows of the Red Light District really there as a fully free and informed choice?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What personal, economic or family stories lie behind each illuminated window?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many of those people come from backgrounds of poverty, social exclusion, violence, homophobia or a total lack of opportunities?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And above all: why should anyone find themselves in a position where selling their body seems like the only way to move forward?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we dug deeper, spoke with locals, read reports, and followed the social debate, we were forced to confront a hard truth:<\/span><\/p><p><b><i>\u201cNot everything that glows under the neon lights of the Red Light District is gold.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>The deeper issue: beyond the shop window<\/b><\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dutch model is often presented as an example of a \u201cmodern\u201d way of regulating prostitution. And it\u2019s true that there is a legal framework and stricter controls than in many other countries. But over time, we stopped fully believing the official narrative.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because having legislation that, in my view, \u201cgives the system a clean face\u201d is one thing; actually solving the underlying problems is another:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human trafficking,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pimping and exploitation,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organised networks,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the reality of people in such vulnerable situations that prostitution appears to be the only way out.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We came to see that, behind the discourse of individual freedom, there is still a great deal of inequality, pressure, and a lack of real alternatives. And that forced us, as a company, to look in an uncomfortable mirror:<\/span><\/p><p><b>Do we really want to be one more link in the chain that turns this reality into just another tourist attraction?<\/b><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>Our decision: ethics before sales<\/b><\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From that point on, we began discussing the issue seriously within the team: Xavi, Juan, me, and part of our staff. It wasn\u2019t a quick or easy conversation. The Red Light District tour was in demand, it sold well, and many travellers asked for it almost automatically, as <em>\u201cone of those things you just do in Amsterdam\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there was something that weighed more than the numbers: our personal and professional convictions.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We understood that, although it is technically possible to run a <em>\u201crespectful\u201d and \u201ccritical\u201d<\/em> tour \u2014 and there are companies in the city that try to do so \u2014 in practice there is still a clear imbalance: the Red Light District has become a <\/span><b>stage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the people working there end up being part of the <\/span><b>show<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that visitors come to see.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we don\u2019t want to be part of that.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, as partners and as a team, we made a clear decision:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We stopped offering Red Light District tours because, for ethical reasons and moral conviction, we do not want to contribute to trivialising a reality that is deeply complex and painful for many people.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t a marketing decision. It was a matter of conscience.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>What we <\/b><b><i>do<\/i><\/b><b> continue to offer<\/b><\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that we don\u2019t offer this tour doesn\u2019t mean we turn our backs on the topic. Quite the opposite. We continue to talk about Amsterdam\u2019s history, its relationship with tolerance, personal freedoms, and its many contradictions.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amsterdamguias.com\/en\/walking-tours-amsterdam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">On other routes<\/a> through the city, when the context is right, we address these issues from a critical and respectful perspective.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We prefer to design experiences that put <\/span><b>culture, history, diversity, and everyday local life<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the centre, without turning anyone\u2019s vulnerability into a selling point.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>Thank you for understanding<\/b><\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you were thinking of booking a Red Light District tour with us, I hope these lines help you understand why you won\u2019t find it in our catalogue.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know there are other companies that still offer it.
